Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you have depression. A serious condition that can last months or even years, that’s depression. Each year about 15 million Americans suffer from this illness. Only about 4.5 million of those people seek help, which is unfortunate. All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses. Depression gets worse with time. Without treatment it will take over your life. People should pay attention to the signs.

A variety of factors, and even combinations of these factors, lead to the many types of depression. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. It can be given birth by the very environment that the victim lives in. It can be caused by stress brought on by even more detrimental factors. Depression is a very complicated disease. As well, the human brain and its workings are quite complex. To learn how the mind works, doctors and researches are studying it each day. We know that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. More about the way this process works is learned each day. Better treatments come from more knowledge.

Depression treatment comes from a variety of medications on the market. Miracle treatments also exist, but many times these are empty claims. You have to be careful to seek medications that have been clinically studied and have been proven to display positive effects in the treatment of depression. Not too long ago people who were considered mentally ill were thrown into asylums, never again to be seen or heard. Fortunately that has all been changed. The anti-depressant Prozac first came into use in the USA in 1988. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.

A new class of anti-depressants has become widely used since then. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, SSRI, are being used today. These include Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox. All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects. There are also numerous natural herbal medications available on the market. The ingredient in St. John’s Wort extract, heperforin, is present in those that prove every bit as effective as anti-depressant drugs. Some herbal remedies don’t contain this ingredient in the proper strength so they don’t work. When seeking depression medications that work ask questions, do your research, and know the facts.

Depression is a complicated illness. Depression can linger and grow for months or even years before being detected . It’s known that some 15 million people in America will be impacted by various types of depression each year. Unfortunately fewer than 1/3 of these people will look for help for thier depression. Those with the disease don’t even know it in many cases. Life is full of stress on a daily basis. It’s more difficult to navigate the obstacles in life. Hand to mouth survival is common. The recent economic crises has created even more pressure to obtain and hold a job. Stress can be one of the main causes of depression.

There are many different types of depression. Some of the labels mean the same thing. These include medical depression, clinical depression and manic depression. Severe depression refers to the most advanced form of the illness. Depression is brought on by many associating factors. One school of thought holds that it’s due to chemical imbalances, simple biology. DNA also carries depression. Those with family histories of depression are at risk.

Common factors can lead to different types of depression. Substance abuse can lead to depression. Both alcoholics and drug abusers can contract depression. The death of a family member can increase the chance for depression. Mental depression historically has a stigma associated with it. Prior to mental illness being recognized as a disease it was considered by many to be a personal defect. As a result treatment wasn’t applied in a way that could help the patient. Each depression phase has it’s own negative results. Early detection, then, is necessary to fight depression.

Once the disease has progressed to severe depression the illness must be treated. At this stage suicide is often the result. The calls for assistance weren’t answered and now the chance to solve the problem is fading. Treatment is typically ‘talk therapy’ and anti-depressants. Also available are support groups that can help. Natural herbs have also been found to work. Help is out there no matter the type of depression. If lingering signs of depression exist then please seek help. Actual cures for depression may include a combination of antidepressants, psychotherapy, health food and alternative holistic treatments, similar to acupuncture.
